What is aqueous coating and how is it different from PE?

Aqueous coating is a water-based barrier technology that bonds directly into paper cellulose fibres, unlike polyethylene (PE) which forms a separate plastic film on the paper surface. PE-coated cups shed approximately 25,000 microplastic particles into hot beverages and cannot be recycled with normal paper waste. Aqueous-coated cups contain zero plastic, shed zero microplastics, and are fully re-pulpable.

Do paper cups contain microplastics?

Standard PE-coated paper cups release approximately 25,000 microplastic particles into hot beverages at 85–95°C, according to research by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and IIT Kharagpur. PLA-coated cups also shed microplastics under stress. Pratva's aqueous-coated cups contain zero plastic polymer, so there are zero microplastics released.

What does CPPRI certification mean?

CPPRI (Central Pulp and Paper Research Institute) is a Government of India body in Saharanpur, UP, that tests whether coated paper products can be recycled in standard paper mills. CPPRI re-pulpability certification confirms that Pratva cups can be processed alongside normal paper waste — no special equipment or industrial composters needed.

Is PLA coating truly eco-friendly?

No. PLA (polylactic acid) is classified as plastic by both the European Chemicals Agency and the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive. It requires industrial composting at 58°C+ for 12–16 weeks to decompose — India has fewer than 20 such facilities. In Indian landfills, PLA persists for decades. It also sheds microplastics under UV and mechanical stress.

Are Pratva cups recyclable?

Yes. Pratva cups are CPPRI-tested re-pulpable, meaning they can be recycled at any standard paper mill alongside newspaper and cardboard. The aqueous coating disperses in water during re-pulping. PE and PLA cups cannot be recycled this way because their plastic film contaminates paper recycling streams.
